About Project Lazarus
A Lasting Commitment
Project Lazarus remains one of the few remaining housing programs in the U.S. dedicated to people living with HIV, providing residential services and comprehensive care through community partnerships.
About Project Lazarus
For over 40 years, Project Lazarus has been a constant presence in the greater New Orleans community. Founded in 1985 during the height of the AIDS crisis, we began as a hospice—offering comfort, peace, and respect to individuals facing the end of life when few resources existed. While HIV treatments and outcomes have changed, our commitment to the community has never wavered. Today, Project Lazarus continues to stand alongside people living with HIV, particularly those who have too often been left without access, advocacy, or care.
Our organization offers a safe and supportive home to up to 23 residents at a time, serving roughly 70 individuals each year. Every person who walks through our doors is met with warmth and immediate care: through a private room, nourishing meals prepared daily, and steady, relationship-centered support. An integrated programming model combines counseling, medical case management, and essential community partner resources, ensuring residents are cared for in mind, body, and spirit. With 24/7 staff assistance, our residence is designed to be a place of stability and healing for people living with HIV.
Project Lazarus operates as an independent, non-denominational organization and is a sponsored agency of the Archdiocese of New Orleans. The Archdiocese provides the rent-free usage of the facilities we have called home for over 40 years, allowing us to focus our resources on programming, care, and long-term sustainability.
Governance is provided by a dedicated volunteer Board of Directors, led by Board Chair, Gary Schiro. Project Lazarus maintains full responsibility for all fundraising, financial oversight, and the ongoing care, repair, and improvement of our facilities.
Nonprofit Status: Project Lazarus is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
